Scottsdale Fashion Square Rings in the Lunar New Year

Though we often associate the Lunar New Year with Chinese tradition, the reality is that anyone can partake in this momentous day. In fact, across the globe, millions of people come together to observe and celebrate as they embark upon a new, prosperous year of good fortune, wealth, and longevity.

More than 400 Phoenix and Scottsdale residents rang in the Lunar New Year at Scottsdale Fashion Square's celebration. The free, festive event took place on Saturday, February 17 at the food court in the iconic, 1.9 million-square-foot shopping center.

A Grand Celebration

The celebration opened and closed with the Taiko Drum Group, known for its loud, fast, and compelling drumming. While musicians played on the performance stage, guests watched a remarkable celebration of Asian culture put on by dancers wearing colorful, eye-catching costumes.

AZ White Crane Kung Fu dazzled with a martial arts demonstration and did a splendid, traditional Lion Dance that bestowed upon the audience protection and good luck for the year. An aerial silk performer and contortionist further added to the excitement.

But the celebration didn't stop there. Hands-on opportunities, including calligraphist and origami stations, also provided shoppers with special take-home creations. A beautiful pagoda acted as the perfect backdrop for photographs, while red envelopes, Chinese fans, and Tiffany & Co. red envelope boxes delighted shoppers throughout the event.

The Retail Experience

Scottsdale Fashion Square retailers extended that "good fortune" by offering special promotions all day long, allowing shoppers to make a full day of it and shop before, during, and after the performances.

For example, Michael Stars offered 20% off, shoppers at Stuart Weitzman received a surprise "Red Envelope" with any purchase, Escada handed out a free "Lucky Red Envelope Set," and there was a gift with purchase from The Walking Company. Other retailers handing out red envelope offers included Burberry, David Yurman, Johnny Was, Montblanc, and OMEGA.
