FALL 2017
By Kristen Bateman for Modern Muse

Looking for an easy way to step up your beauty game this fall? Enter highlighters: the best way to add a little glow to your routine. Whether your look of choice is gently sun-kissed or luminous-like-J.Lo, we've rounded up some pro tips on how to wear the best picks out there this season.

Cream to Powder Transformers

Choose a creamy illuminator that transforms to a powder texture for a unique matte look that's still glowy. Benefit Cosmetics' Watt's Up!, found at Ulta Beauty stores, does the trick. While you can use the applicator, to make the product last even longer, makeup artist and founder of Stowaway Cosmetics, Julie Fredrickson says, "Apply the highlighter with your fingers and make sure to set your look with a setting powder and a setting spray."

Aurora-Themed Colors

For a dramatic look, or for a night out, choose a palette that has a variety of otherworldly colors, like pastel blues, peaches, and purples. Think of it as if you're painting the Northern Lights or aurora on your cheekbones. Anastasia Beverly Hills' aptly named Aurora Glow Kit (found at Sephora and Ulta Beauty stores) is a great option.

"To enhance your complexion, choose a metallic or unconventional color that is similar to your skin tone," suggests Samantha Manuzak of the Ulta Beauty Design Team. "If you have a cool skin tone, try a lavender. If you have a warm skin tone, try a pink."

Classic Powder Power

Don't underestimate the power of great, traditional powder luminizers. They are also one of the easiest and most straightforward products to use. Whether it's a palette or a single color, a powder finish can give you maximum staying power. Urban Decay's Afterglow Highlighter Palette (available at Ulta Beauty) has a variety of shades that work on many different skin tones.

"Grab a fluffy brush, swirl to grab pigment and dust on areas you normally highlight," says Fredrickson, referring to the cheekbones, below-the-brow area and nose bridge. "Blend it out with a clean brush if the look is too intense. The only thing tricky about powder is that it will apply with a lot of pigment and is less buildable than a liquid, so be ready to take it down a notch if you need to."

Liquid Strobes

A liquid product is one of the fastest and easiest ways to brighten up your complexion on a crisp fall day. Choose an option like Cover FX's Custom Enhancer Drops, which comes in a massive variety of shades (available at Ulta Beauty and Sephora) to suit everyone.

"Liquid highlighter can give you the boldest and longest-lasting glow if you layer with a powder on top," Manuzak explains. "Try topping it with a shimmery or iridescent eyeshadow for a unique glow that can last even the longest of days."

Holographic Highlights

Take your makeup to the next level with a holographic touch, which it adds an element of fun to your look. A multidimensional stick, such as NYX's Strobe of Genius (found at NYX boutiques and Ulta Beauty) will have everyone doing a double take.

"Keep your highlighter looking gorgeous into the evening by using it sparingly in areas that tend to get oily or dewy on their own," says Manuzak. She also suggests applying "an illuminating primer underneath. The primer will help your glow stay all day and prevent your entire face from looking too shiny."
