Back to School: How to Wear Sneakers Like a Street Style Star

FALL 2017
By Kristen Bateman for Modern Muse

Searching for a new pair of shoes for your back-to-school wardrobe? Consider the sneaker. Its humble design has come a long way — especially now that labels create options decked out in pearls and velvet — but you also can't go wrong with classic silhouettes from iconic brands. Take your inspiration from eight street style stars who love their sneakers.

Contrast Your Colors

When you're wearing a solid hue, nothing is chicer than a pair of kicks with high contrast. Whether they're white with a striking red stripe, as pictured above, or tennis shoes with a bright green heel, contrast is one of fall's biggest footwear trends.

Go Retro with Cool Stripes

Take a cue from fashion blogger Chiara Ferragni, who has styled a tartan dress with some white sneakers with retro stripes from Gucci. In recent seasons, the brand surprisingly has become one of the chicest purveyors of sportswear-inspired shoes. The sporty stripes cash in on fall's athleisure trend and silver-studded soles add a hint of punk. Think of it as jewelry for your feet!

Choose a Low Top

Traditional sneakers are getting a makeover this season with versions that show more of your ankles than ever before. Opt for a cool low-top sneaker, like ones from Nike (pictured), for both day and night. It's never been so easy to show off cute socks.

Opt for Embellishment

Who says your sneakers can't be as fancy as your favorite party dress? Look for comfy footwear covered in velvet, sequins, and pearls — or even embroidery. If you want to splurge, Gucci (pictured) makes amazing options too. Wear them with jeans to spice things up, or with your favorite night-on-the-town outfit.

Mix Chunky Retro Styles with Ladylike Skirts

Brands of all price points are looking to the past this season by creating sneakers with thick soles and chunky silhouettes. These options have a decidedly '90s vibe (which the fashion world is currently obsessed with). To make them feel more modern, team your kicks with a ladylike skirt or gorgeous gown.

Go Classic

You truly can't go wrong with a classic, but why not make your look even more fun by opting for the adorable version pictured above from Comme des Garçons Play x Converse? A preppy white pair (with the signature heart logo) is as chic with jeans as it is with a '90s-inspired slip dress, which you can transform for cooler weather by layering with your favorite t-shirt.

Make Socks Your New Best Friend

For fall, show off your socks. Whether you opt for plain white or colorfully printed versions, you can easily team them up with some Nike sneakers (pictured). If your socks are extra long, even better — scrunch them down to add texture to your style. You'd be surprised how chic white tube socks can be with the right shoes.

When in Doubt, Mix Black and White

Sometimes, it's okay for fashion to be formulaic. A pair of Adidas black tennis shoes with white accents (or vice versa), pictured, will always be cool. For the chillier weather, nail the look with some white jeans and a white tee plus a casual leather jacket thrown over your shoulders.
