Carrie Bradshaw once famously said, "I like my money right where I can see it. Hanging in my closet." Well, the same school of thought can apply to your handbags too. If you're thinking of purchasing an investment bag this fall — one that will hold its value or even increase in value if you choose to resell it later on — you've come to the right place. Here, Sarah Davis, founder of Fashionphile (one of the country's biggest secondhand luxury handbag retailers) shares her picks for the best investments this season.
Louis Vuitton Monogram Speedy
According to Davis, you can't go wrong with a classic Louis Vuitton. "The Louis Vuitton Monogram Speedy has passed the test of time," she says. "It was as cool when your grandma was your age as it is today. In the 1980s, this style sold for $240. The bag pictured above was bought in 2013 when it retailed for $675 and we have this very one priced on our site at $895." Pick one up at Louis Vuitton boutiques inside department stores.
Chanel Classic Black Flap in Caviar Leather
You probably already know that a Chanel bag (available at select Saks Fifth Avenue locations) is an incredible investment. But a lot of that has to do with the materials it's made from. "Caviar is so hearty that it looks amazing even after years of use," explains Davis of the textured leather. "This bag cost $4900 when it was purchased, but the same bag retails for $5500 today. Again, when their price goes up, so does your investment value." This is an investment you can use for work and a night out.
Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM in Damier Ebene
Like we said, Louis Vuitton is always a solid investment. "We sell more Louis Vuitton Neverfull handbags in the MM size than any other," she notes. "This style flies off the shelf, and with Louis Vuitton's consistent price increases, your investment is safe. Any Louis Vuitton bag in Damier canvas has this nice treated brown leather trim that is very hard to destroy. The result is that the bags consistently sell for more than their monogram counterparts." With the minimal pattern and large size, this is a fashion girl's dream tote, and a great option if you're not a fan of the classic monogram options.
Gucci Pebbled Calfskin Soho Disco
For an investment bag that's a little smaller but still retains its value, opt for the Gucci Pebbled Calfskin Soho Disco, available at select Nordstrom locations and Gucci boutiques. Davis explains that it resells near the original retail price. "You'll notice a pattern here," she says. "Another black bag and leather that can take some significant wear and still look amazing. Delicate leathers and wild colors both age in a way that isn't helpful for resale."
Goyard Chevron Saint Louis
If you love bright colors but still want to buy a bag that heavily retains its value, you're in luck. "One exception to the 'always buy a neutral' investment bag rule is Goyard," says Davis. "Goyard charges hundreds of dollars more for special color options, and those dollars come back in your pocket at resale." Luckily, Goyard's colorful totes (available at Neiman Marcus) are also big enough to stuff a magazine, laptop, and drink inside — so your money will be well spent on a great everyday bag.
