Fishnets are Back: How To Wear Them

By Kristen Bateman for Modern Muse

Fishnets are having a major moment in fashion right now, with everyone from Kim Kardashian to street style stars like Chiara Ferragni wearing them under jeans, with dresses and as socks peaking out from under cool sneakers. And if the runway is any indication, fishnets are only getting more popular. The fall 2017 runways of Jenny Packham, Phillip Lim, Giorgio Armani and Alexander Wang were full of models wearing fishnet stockings, fishnet-style shirts and more.

Wondering how to pull off the trend in real life? Ahead, five easy tips.

1. Choose an Off-the-Shoulder Dress

For a night out or brunch with friends, an off-the-shoulder dress can be the perfect balance to a chic pair of fishnet tights. You're already showing plenty of bare skin between your exposed shoulder and arm. The tights — which can be found in different variations at Forever 21 — prevent your legs from looking like more of the same, adding an extra layer of detail and dimension to the outfit.

2. Go for an Ankle-Strap Pair of Heels

While a pair of flats, fashion sneakers or regular heels would all be perfectly fine to pair with your fishnet stockings, a heel with an ankle strap breaks up the silhouette and makes legs look even longer. Extra points if the ankle strap matches the bold hue of your off-the-shoulder dress.

3. Play With Proportions

A short dress/long coat combo gets a major seasonal update when you throw a pair of pretty fishnets into the mix. You can also swap out the dress for a miniskirt and blouse, with a long jacket. Here, experimenting with a wider style of fishnets can also be fun. Various options of wide-net or embellished fishnets can be found by Wolford at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstom and Bloomingdale's.

4. Opt for a Knee-High Boot

If it's a chilly day, or you'd rather make a more subtle statement with fishnet tights, knee-high boots can be an amazing addition to any outfit. Choose a pair in a contrasting color to make the stockings stand out even more, or opt for a boot that matches the same hue as your tights to complete a simple, minimalist outfit.

5. If in Doubt, Wear Them with Jeans

The most modern way to wear your fishnet stockings? With your favorite pair of jeans. One chic styling trick is to pair them with slightly cropped skinny jeans so they just peek out. A cut-out boot or a pair of strappy heels will highlight the look. Of course, you can also rock them with a pair of ripped, distressed jeans for something a bit more dramatic.
