8 Functional Outfits for Every Type of Workout

SUMMER 2017
By Tiffany Tse for Modern Muse

Your baggy college T-shirt and worn-in sweats might be good enough for lounging around at home, but when you're trying to whip your bikini body into shape, you'll need serious workout gear. To help you prep for every of-the-moment workout—from Pilates to paddleboarding—we've rounded up eight looks that seamlessly combine fashion with function. Whether you love heart-pumping boxing classes or prefer calorie-torching surf sessions, these moisture-wicking, maximum-support outfits will help you reach peak performance.

1. Surfing

Hurley Quick Dry High and Quick Dry Boy Shorts, available at Nike.

A skimpy bikini is a recipe for disaster when you're riding the waves. If you want to rock a two-piece, try one with ample support up top and plenty of coverage on the bottom, so everything stays put in case of a wipeout. This Hurley two-piece comes with removable waterproof bra cups for extra reinforcements—plus, it's made of quick-drying fabric.

2. Yoga/Pilates

Free People FP Movement Halo Crop Top and Free People FP Movement Halo Cutout Leggings, available at Nordstrom.

When you're in the downward dog pose, the last thing you need is excess baggy fabric falling over your head. Stick to well-fitted pieces that won't get in the way when you're bending, twisting, and flipping over, and avoid anything with zippers, buttons, or other hardware that might dig into your skin as you move. Thanks to stylish details (like a built-in bra in the crop top and the cutouts and smooth seams in the leggings), this Free People Movement set is the perfect fit for a yogi.

3. Running

Nike Pro Classic Medium Support Sports Bra and Nike Power Cool Women's Running Crops, available at Nike.

A good old-fashioned jog means zero A/C, so keep cool in breezy, breathable separates like Nike's semi-transparent tank top and cropped leggings with strategically placed mesh panels. Paired with a racerback bra that allows for a full range of motion, this runner's outfit will help you sprint back home in no time.

4. Boxing

Lorna Jane Train Insane S/Slv Tee and Ultimate Compression F/L Tight, available at Lorna Jane.

Whether you're throwing punches or doing burpees in boxing class, be prepared to sweat—a lot. To make sure the only thing you're focusing on is your form, go for Lorna Jane's loose, lightweight T-shirt and a pair of high-waist leggings that you won't have to adjust mid-lesson (remember: your hands will be covered in boxing gloves).

5. Cycling

Alo Yoga Sunny Strappy Sports Bra and Epic Leggings, available at Bloomingdale's.

Ditch anything roomy, oversize, and flowy in favor of body-hugging pieces that won't impede your cardio-burning ride on the bike. Paired with a sports bra designed for low-impact exercise, Alo Yoga's leggings (a combination of nylon and spandex with mesh inserts) should do the trick while still keeping you cool and comfortable.

6. Swimming

Stella McCartney Neoprene Mesh One-Piece Swimsuit, available at Bloomingdale's.

With its curve-conscious silhouette and plunging neckline, this Stella McCartney neoprene suit is stylish enough for any poolside lounge chair. But if you're a serious swimmer hoping to practice your breaststroke, you'll also appreciate its cut-out racerback style, which allows shoulders to move freely and ensures straps won't slip out of place.

7. Hiking

Lorna Jane Unbreakable Sports Bra and Optimum Run Short, available at Lorna Jane.

The next time you need to remove heat-trapping layers during an uphill trek, you'll be glad you're wearing Lorna Jane's moisture-wicking sports bra (it has removable padding!) and two-way stretch shorts, which have multiple pockets to store your keys, ID, and other small necessities.

8. Stand-up paddleboarding

Reef Cove Solids Long Sleeve Rashguard available at SwimSpot.

Stand-up paddleboarding means you'll hopefully spend most of your time outside the water, so skip a full-on wetsuit, especially in the summertime. Instead, try Reef's lightweight rash guard. If you're a beginner, a long-sleeved top has another purpose—helping protect your skin from UV exposure in case you fall in the water too many times and wash your sunscreen off in the process.
